We are focusing our efforts in four key areas :
•Working to help prevent mental illness
•Earlier diagnosis and intervention
•Rescue and support of the mentally challenged
•More personalised and effective rehabilitation
We continue to support research into all types of mental illness and across all age groups. We’re also keeping our focus on understanding why schizophrenia is so very prevalent among Africans so we can use this vital knowledge to save more lives. We’re increasing our research in key areas such as early diagnosis, and hard-to-treat illnesses such as anxiety disorders, personality disorders, premenstrual tension, postpartum depression, postpartum psychosis and sleep disorders. We want to personalise prevention, screening and treatment and bring lasting benefits to patients sooner in the process.
To help accelerate progress,we started as two different organisations: The Mercy
For Life Foundation (a non -profit Nigerian NGO) and Carry My Cross (a UK-based mental health institution). Now we work together to prevent the inhumane treatment of the mentally challenged in Nigeria.
We have spent millions of Naira in the last three years alone building vital support services for men and women suffering mental illness. We support the mentally challenged at the Neuro-Psychiatric Specialist hospital in Ondo State, Nigeria, by providing food, medicines, Hospital beds and everything else these desperate people require, including clothing, toiletries and money.
In 2014, we helped the Neuro-psychiatric Specialist Hospital in Ondo state to commemorate world mental health day, raising awareness of the menace of mental illness, abandonment of the mentally challenged and harm done by stigmatization. This event was highly attended by mental health families, stakeholders and government representatives. Throughout 2015 we openly raised the awareness of the unacceptable and degrading treatment of the mentally ill in Nigeria, organizing workshops, symposia and presentations to commemorate world mental health day at National Merit Award House, Aguiyi Ironsi Street, Maitama, Abuja. With your help, we will continue to expand our work in 2016 and beyond.
